The Business Licensing Department is responsible for administering and enforcing the City’s regulations for all commercial and home-based businesses operating within Centerville.
The department reviews and processes applications for commercial business licenses, beer retailer licenses, booth rentals, fireworks retailers, home occupations, temporary business licenses, and food truck business licenses. Staff also manage business renewals, name changes, ownership transfers, location changes, and closures. The department coordinates reviews with other City departments to ensure compliance with zoning, building, and safety requirements prior to license issuance.

A Beer Retailer License is required for a business that wants to sell beer to customers. This application is used in addition to the Commercial Business License. There are different requirements depending on whether the beer will be sold for customers to take home or consumed at the business.

A Booth Rental Application is for a business that rents space or a booth to another person who will operate their own business or provide services from that location. This is commonly used when individual service providers operate independently within an existing business, such as salons, spas, or similar businesses.

A Commercial Business License is required for a business operating from any location in Centerville. Please apply before opening a new commercial business, moving a business to a new location, or changing the type of business being operated.
The license allows the City to verify that the business is operating in an appropriate location and meets applicable zoning, building, fire, and other City requirements. A new commercial business generally requires a fire inspection, and businesses handling food may also need approval from the Davis County Health Department.

A Fireworks Retailer/Seller Permit is for a business that wants to sell fireworks from a temporary or permanent location within the City. Please apply before selling fireworks. This should be completed far enough in advance to allow for the required City and fire-safety reviews. Fireworks stands also require a temporary use permit. Please apply for both applications!

A Home Occupation application is for someone who operates a business from their home in Centerville. The business must meet the City's requirements for operating in a residential area. Please apply before starting a business from your home. If an existing home-based business changes in a way that may affect its zoning or operating requirements, please notify the business department.

A Temporary Business Application is for a business or organization that wants to operate for a limited period of time rather than as a permanent business at a location. Please apply before conducting a temporary sale, event, or business activity. Examples may include temporary retail sales, Christmas tree sales, farmers markets, auctions, model homes, temporary construction offices, and certain food truck operations.
Temporary Businesses Require Temporary Use Permits. Please apply for both applications!

Centerville requires all businesses to acquire and provide a Utah State Ownership Entity Number, a DBA, and a Utah State Sales Tax Number. Additional requirements, such as parking count, zoning, Davis County New Business Information sheet, and specialty license to be submitted.
